Joseph A. Steliga, 97, of Wantage, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, after a brief illness.
Violet, his loving partner of over 33 years, was at his side, together with their live-in caregiver, Nana, who tended to him until the end.
Joe was born May 6, 1926 in Clifton, New Jersey, later moving with his family to Garfield, NJ, where he was enrolled in the Garfield school system. Joe's teachers brought his impressive talents to the attention of several prominent businessmen who helped him pave the way to a long and satisfying career in construction.
His work ethic was beyond reproach, leading him to become one of the most successful builders of his time. Joe's scope of construction included Oakland, Franklin Lakes, Wyckoff, Fair Lawn and other neighboring towns.
Joe became interested in the art of "tilt-up" building construction, which involved the pouring of cement walls for massive buildings on the ground and then having them lifted up by heavy cranes and set into place. This method was extremely profitable on the West Coast because of the milder climate, so Joe decided to visit the plants in Pasadena, California. He brought his knowledge back to Franklin Lakes, where he constructed his own buildings that stand today.
Joe was a quiet, modest man, demanding little, giving much and living life simply and as it unfolded. He was truly family oriented....a trait which he shared with his partner, Violet, and the reason their bond was so strong and true.
All who were fortunate enough to meet Joe and came to know him, are truly blessed - as are those of us who managed to pierce his quiet nature and sharp wit.
Our hearts are broken - but our memories will sustain us.
There is no service planned at this time; however, a celebration of Joe's wonderful life will take place at a future time.
